Welcome to the mikAdvance OneWeekInAPACict 5G/IoT edition blog - targeted for ICT professionals as a summary of the week’s industry and technology news to help them remember the essentials of the APAC ICT for the next week activities!

CommunicAsia 2017 in Singapore created a lot of input. 5G/IoT connection being searched. 5G will be vertical. Dual gets multi in LTE IoT. Korea rushing ahead of Japan. Docomo pulling its vendors. Malaysian MNO overheating. Let’s get it started!

FactFlash5G/IOT For Not So Dummies™️
>> At over 6 GHz bands the challenge will be the coverage area. As the size of the antenna is proportional to the frequency, one can't even put the antenna connectors on the devices so that all testing will be tested with OTA. This is a real challenge, e.g. if you're working on bigger devices. Then the far-field requirement is tremendous (the chamber radius about 100m). This requires really innovative ways to measure OTA performance.

>> We will find a way... - Someday we’ll find it, the 5G/IoT connection: A common mantra in the telecoms sector is that 5G and IoT are two sides of the same evolutionary coin – that 5G will enable profitable IoT apps, and that IoT is the chief business case that will justify 5G investment. And yet LTE will still exist, while certain IoT apps will thrive without 5G via LPWA. Which raises the question: Is the link between 5G and IoT/M2M really as inextricable as the hype machine claims? - Don Sambandaraksa for disruptive.asia
>> 5G will be vertical - Connecting with verticals key to 5G success: The success of 5G will depend on telecoms operators opening up to, and connecting with, a multitude of industry verticals to understand their businesses and help them develop new use cases and business models. - Joseph Waring for Mobile World Live
>> Virtual clouds are disturb... disrupting - SDN and cloud are disrupting network security postures: The shift to cloud-based services and network virtualization promises many benefits, but it’s also contributing to an increasingly complex cloud landscape that is forcing cloud service providers and even network security vendors to rethink their security postures. And if they’re not, they’d better. - John C. Tanner for disruptive.asia
>> Satellites to survive 5G - Satellite still has a role to play in 5G: Satellite may not be the sexiest of technologies at a time when the telecoms industry is obsessed with 5G, but satellite companies are fully prepared to be a relevant part of that ecosystem, insists Intelsat. - John C. Tanner for disruptive.asia
>> 5G bands for free! - Singapore lets telcos test 5G services for free: Government waives frequency fees for 5G trials until December 2019, in a move aimed at driving the market and uncovering potential use cases for the next-generation network. - Eileen Yu for By The Way via ZDNet
>> HK operators getting impatient - HKT, SmarTone press for 5G spectrum policy overhaul: HKT and SmarTone called on the territory’s telecoms regulator to accelerate the supply of 5G spectrum and devise a clear roadmap or risk the industry and Hong Kong suffering irreparable damage. - Joseph Waring for Mobile World Live

China
>> Dual gets multi in CMCC LTE IoT - Qualcomm, China Mobile and Mobike to trial LTE IoT multimode: The trial will use China Mobile’s 2G/4G multimode network and Mobike’s smart lock, which is supported by the Qualcomm Technologies’ modem for IoT apps. - Juan Pedro Tomás for Enterprise IoT Insights
>> Lesser Panda half-way in 5G - ZTE focuses on second phase of China’s 5G trial: The vendor is currently testing 5G technology mostly in the city of Guangzhou. - Juan Pedro Tomás for RCR Wireless News
>> Brothers in arms manufacturing smartly - Huawei, Toshiba to work on NB-IoT for 'smart factory’: Huawei has signed a MoU with Toshiba to collaborate on the integration of NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) for the development of “smart factory” solutions. - Staff writer for telecom asia.net

Korea
>> Korea rushing ahead of Japan - South Korea to launch first commercial 5G network in 2019: The government said that 5G subscribers will probably account for 5% of total base by 2020. - Juan Pedro Tomás for RCR Wireless News
>> Koreans aiming high as always - South Korea targets 30% 5G penetration in 2021: South Korea plans to complete deployment of a commercial 5G network in the second half of 2019 and is targeting 5 per cent 5G penetration in 2020. - Joseph Waring for Mobile World Live
>> Samsung moves to V2X 5G penthouse - AT&T, Samsung join 5GAA in pursuit of the connected-car market: The U.S. telecom and the South Korean electronics behemoth joined members of the organization that include Audi, BMW, China Mobile, Ericsson, Intel, Nokia, Vodafone and Qualcomm to pursue the connected-car market. Jaguar Land Rover and NTT DoCoMo were also named to the board. - Colin Gibbs for Fierce Wireless
>> Making IoT simple (please start with abbreviations…) - Samsung, VMware team up for simpler IoT: Samsung Electronics and VMware announced a new collaboration to help simplify Internet of Things (IoT) for both information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) teams by expanding end-to-end IoT solutions for industrial and enterprise customers. - Staff writer for telecom asia.net

Japan
>> Docomo takes a ride with Conti - Joint research and development collaboration between Continental and NTT DOCOMO to realize 5G vehicle communications: Continental has started a joint research and development collaboration with the Japanese telecommunications company NTT DOCOMO to realize 5G vehicle communications, enhance connected infotainment functions and build the foundation for cellular based vehicle-to-everything (V2X) wireless communications systems. - Telematics Wire
>> A Bit of Coins into a Toyota - Toyota wants to use bitcoin tech to share self-driving car data: Self-driving cars can only get better if information is safely shared. That's where blockchain technology comes in. - Andrew Krok for ROAD SHOW by CNET
>> Docomo pulling its vendors - Nokia, Intel and NTT Docomo test out 4.5 GHz band for 5G: Nokia, Intel and NTT Docomo have kicked off a new bout of trials to test out the 4.5 GHz band, one of the 5G candidates in Japan. - Jamie Davies for telecoms.com

Developing Markets
>> Is this Malaysian MNO overheating? - Why YTL is revved and ready to get cracking on 5G: Hot on the heels of last year’s VoLTE service launch, Malaysian cellco YTL Communications is on the move again and making big plans to start work on 5G in the coming months. In this interview, YTL CEO Wing Lee gives us a preview of his company’s 5G strategy. - John C. Tanner for disruptive.asia
